The theme of World Breastfeeding Week varies every year, and it focuses on different aspects of breastfeeding and maternal health. The week is an opportunity for governments, health care organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and communities to come together to promote breastfeeding education, support mothers in their breastfeeding journey, and remove barriers that hinder successful breastfeeding practices. provides.

The WHO and UNICEF recommend that babies start breastfeeding within the first hour of birth and be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life – which means that no other foods or liquids, including water, are provided.

Babies should be breastfed on demand – ie as many times as the baby wants, day and night. No bottle, teat or pacifier should be used. From 6 months of age, children should start eating safe and adequate complementary foods, while breastfeeding should continue until two years of age or beyond.

Breastfeeding has many health benefits for both babies and mothers. It provides essential nutrients and antibodies to the newborns, helps in strengthening their immune system and reducing the risk of various diseases. For mothers, breastfeeding may aid in postpartum recovery and may help reduce the risk of certain health conditions.

Events such as seminars, workshops, webinars and community gatherings are organized during World Breastfeeding Week to spread awareness and provide information about the importance of breastfeeding. It’s time to encourage open discussion about breastfeeding practices, provide support for breastfeeding moms, and work toward creating a breastfeeding-friendly environment for families around the world.
