Ovechkin was born on September 17, 1985 in Moscow, Russia. He began playing professional hockey in Russia before being drafted by the Washington Capitals in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in 2005 and has played for the Capitals his entire career. He was named to the Russian national team for the 2004 World Cup of Hockey at the age of 19.Ovechkin is known for his scoring ability and physical play, and has won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s leading goal scorer, eight times.
