 What is Pre-exposure prophylaxis

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medication that can be taken daily to help reduce the risk of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) transmission. PrEP is recommended for people who are at high risk of HIV transmission, such as those who are in a sexual relationship with someone living with HIV or those who inject drugs.

PrEP is taken as a daily pill and contains two medications, tenofovir and emtricitabine, which work to block the virus from entering and replicating in the body. When taken consistently, PrEP has been shown to be highly effective at reducing the risk of HIV transmission. It is most effective when taken daily, but it can also be taken on an “on-demand” basis, with doses taken around the times of potential HIV exposure.

To be effective, PrEP must be taken consistently and as prescribed. It is important to see a healthcare provider regularly for HIV testing and to discuss any potential side effects. PrEP should be taken in combination with other HIV prevention methods, such as using condoms and not sharing needles, to further reduce the risk of HIV transmission.
