International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples : The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is observed every year on 9 August. The day aims to promote and protect the rights of indigenous peoples around the world, as well as to recognize and celebrate their unique cultures, traditions, languages and contributions to society.

The first meeting of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations was held in Geneva in 1982 to raise awareness of the needs of these population groups. Then later, by resolution 49/214 of 23 December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided that the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples would be celebrated every year on 9 August.

In 1990, the United Nations General Assembly declared 1993 as the International Year of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Later, the General Assembly established two International Decades of the World’s Indigenous Peoples: the first 1995 – 2004 and the second 2005 – 2014.

The United Nations (UN) established this ritual to raise awareness of the challenges faced by indigenous communities, such as issues related to discrimination, land rights, cultural protection and social justice. The day also provides an opportunity for indigenous peoples to express their concerns and advocate for their rights on a global platform.

Each year, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is marked by a variety of events, conferences, workshops, cultural exhibitions and discussions focused on indigenous issues. The day often revolves around a specific theme that highlights a particular aspect of indigenous rights and welfare.

The observance of this day reflects the ongoing efforts to recognize the rights and contributions of indigenous communities, as well as the need to address historical and contemporary injustices faced by them. It is time to promote inclusivity, respect and understanding among all cultures and to work towards a more equitable and just world for Indigenous peoples.
