- Oil Separator – Removes and recycles oil mist from the refrigerant in the discharge line to prevent oil loss and maintain compressor lubrication.
- High-velocity refrigerant-oil mixture enters the oil separator from the discharge line.
- The oil-free refrigerant exits toward the condenser.
- Separated oil is returned to the compressor crankcase via a float valve or oil return line.
- Types of Oil Separators:
- Mechanical (Baffle type) → Uses metal plates to slow flow & separate oil.
- Coalescing filter type → Uses fine mesh filters to capture tiny oil droplets.
- Centrifugal type → Spins refrigerant to force oil separation.
- Benefits:
✔ Prevents oil accumulation in the system.
✔ Improves heat exchanger efficiency.
✔ Extends compressor life.
